The development of fine motor skills is essential in a child’s growth and can help them become more independent. This is particularly important for children starting school as they are away from their parents, likely for the first time.

There are plenty of activities that you can do with your children to help develop their fine motor skills, whether this is indoors at home or outside during outdoor play.

In this blog, we discuss the importance of fine motor skills development, suggest engaging and exciting activities for children to develop these skills, and explore how outdoor play can be particularly useful.

    What are Fine Motor Skills?

Fine motor skills refer to the coordination of small muscles in the body to perform controlled and precise movements. Typically, people think of fine motor skills in relation to your hands, fingers, and forearms.

    Examples of Fine Motor Skills

There is a range of everyday activities that involve the use of fine motor skills, including:

    • Writing
    • Cutting
    • Eating
    • Building
    • Drawing
    • Colouring
    • Buttoning
    • Zipping

Why is Developing Fine Motor Skills Important?

As well as teaching control, stability, and coordination, the development of fine motor skills is crucial in helping children become more independent. Once they have mastered skills like gripping, buttoning, zipping, and cutting, children will be able to carry out important everyday tasks on their own, like dressing themselves, feeding themselves, opening containers, and tying their shoelaces.

This level of independence is also important in setting children up for success in school. Being able to grip a pen or pencil correctly will allow them to write, draw, and express their creativity independently. They will also be able to open lunch boxes and correctly use utensils so they can eat independently with their peers at lunchtime.

Activities to Develop Fine Motor Skills

There are many activities that children can get involved in to develop their fine motor skills, whether that’s at home, school, or during outdoor play. We have outlined some fun and engaging ideas below.

    Weaving

Weaving different materials together, such as ribbon, string, thread, and fabric strips, can help children develop their pincer grip and improve dexterity. Add an extra level of challenge by asking children to thread beads, buttons, paper clips, and other small items into their creation.

While you don’t need specialist equipment to carry out this activity, investing in a weave table or weave panel can add a communal element and encourage children to work together with their peers while improving their fine motor skills.

    Cooking

Involving your child in cooking and food preparation is a great way to improve their fine motor skills. Actions like chopping, slicing, and peeling all require control and precision.

Using child-safe utensils and with adult supervision, you could get children involved in:

    • Cutting ingredients
    • Peeling fruits and vegetables like bananas and oranges
    • Pulling grapes off the vine
    • Podding beans and peas

You can adapt this idea to suit outdoor play spaces and encourage imaginative play. Creating a mud pie kitchen with a range of utensils, ‘ingredients’, and ‘recipes’ to follow can be a fun way for children to get creative and practice a range of precise movements.

    Mark Making

Encouraging children to write and draw can teach them how to correctly hold a pen or pencil and improve their accuracy, control, and precision. This is particularly important in ensuring your child is ready for school.

You can get children to write and draw using pen and paper, chalk on pavement, or by utilising mark making equipment like chalkboards and whiteboards in your playground. Learn more about outdoor writing activities for EYFS children.

    Sand Pit Exploration

Setting up a sand play pit in your playground can offer children an exciting and engaging way to improve their fine motor skills. Hide treasures and toys in the sand and encourage the children to use their hands and small tools to explore, shovel sand, and dig for buried treasure.

    Water Sensory Bins

Challenging children to grab small objects floating in water sensory bins can help improve their fine motor skills. Children will have to move with precision and control to be able to catch items as they are moving and bobbing around.

This activity is perfect for outdoor play spaces, as it allows children to fully engage with the challenge without the worry of making a mess indoors. Equipment like our splish splash tables and sensory tables make a great addition to outdoor play spaces.

How Does Outdoor Play Impact Fine Motor Skills Development?

Outdoor play activities are vital in the development of EYFS children. They provide varied opportunities for outdoor learning, social development, and physical development.

Although most people associate outdoor play with the development of gross motor skills, it also provides many opportunities for the development of fine motor skills. Creative mark making activities, playing with and picking up objects, and manipulating playground gym equipment are all examples of outdoor play that help improve a child’s hand-eye coordination, precision, and control.
