It’s fair to say that each school is different and this goes for the outdoor space that each educational setting boasts too. While some schools may have acres of outdoor space to work with, others may only have a courtyard. Despite this, it’s imperative that schools do all they can to make the most of their outdoor areas. In this article, we’re looking at how you can make the most of your outdoor spaces, regardless of size and shape.

Encourage Outdoor Learning

Whether you have a football field sized playground or a simple courtyard style square, utilising this space as an outdoor learning area will truly maximise any outdoor space. From running around and exploring nature to simply carrying out a maths lesson in the fresh air, there’s a lot to be said for outdoor learning. While it may come naturally to some teachers, it’s certainly worth implementing on an adhoc basis, if only to give teachers and students a breath of fresh air and a different space to look at during a lesson.

Provide Seating

Providing seating can be a great way to not only encourage the use of a space but also encourage socialisation at the same time. You may be lucky enough to possess acres of land for your students to enjoy but without seating, you may find your students staying inside simply to find somewhere to sit, especially here in the UK when the ground can often be wet and muddy. Strategically placed seating however, will encourage students outside, even on the colder days. If possible, providing shelter over seating will even make those all-too-often rainy days a non-issue too.

Install Playground Equipment

When people think of playgrounds, they think of huge climbing frames and role play areas, but that’s not all that’s available. Here at Sovereign Play Equipment, we have a range of playground equipment that can be used together to create a huge playground for those with lots of outdoor space, to smaller individual items for those with limited space. Just one piece of equipment could make the difference between your outdoor space being used and going to waste.

Utilise Walls

If you’re super limited on space, why not make use of the walls with activity panels that take up zero space. From games such as wall targets or even noughts and crosses to educational activity panels like Sudoku and even dry wipe boards that can be utilised during outside learning.

Play With Playground Markings

Playground markings are another great way to make the most of your outdoor space without taking up any actual space. Depending on the outdoor space available to you, you can enjoy sports courts and even daily mile tracks to smaller, hopscotch markings and more.
