The benefits of horticulture can have a positive impact on childhood development – below we have listed some of these benefits:

Encourage Mindfulness

Not only does being outside in the fresh air have amazing health benefits but planting and gardening can introduce mindfulness and therapeutic qualities at a young age by engaging the senses. Children can get their hands dirty in the soil, hear the sound of water being poured over the plants, smell the different scents of the flowers and see the bright and varied plants.

Enhances Fine Motor Skills

Digging, individually planting seeds in small pots, picking fruit and vegetables, pouring water over the plants are activities which all involve fine motor skills. It builds strength and dexterity which can in turn help children academically with tasks including holding a pen and writing skills.

Introduces children to concepts of caring for the environment

Gardening not only teaches children about responsibility and taking care of living things it can also encourage an understanding of nature and the environment. It can encourage teachers and parents to teach about concepts of recycling and looking after the atmosphere.

Introduces Scientific Concepts to children.

Gardening helps develop an understanding on science and botany.  They can monitor the progress of the plants whilst learning about the importance and affects of sunlight and water to the growth of a plant.

Enhances organisational skills

When growing different flowers, vegetables and herbs organisation is an integral part of the process. You have to have an understanding of seasons, timings, and the needs of each individual plant. Involving children at a young age can encourage them to develop these skills along with problem solving and patience.
